I drew antelope thru the public draw and have been assigned a ranch (associated with the unit). How does this work exactly? Do I contact the ranch about access/scouting? I colleague at work said that I should get a letter from the ranch and that the are notified as to who drew hunts. I've been putting in for the antelope draw for few years but didn't think that I'd actually draw. Odds are fairly low. Very excited about the hunt. Just curious if anyone has gone thru the process of public draw and hunting on ranch thru the draw. Thanks.

I drew a public antelope tag in NM in 2013. The notification about the tag will include the name of the ranch you are assigned to. I think you will also be given a phone number for the ranch. You should make contact with the ranch a couple of weeks before the hunt. You are only allowed to scout the assigned ranch for the two days prior to your assigned hunt dates. You may be sharing the ranch with other public draw hunters and guided hunters that are using ranch owner tags.

I had a great hunt. The two ranch managers I dealt with were very helpful and accommodating. They both personally drove me around the huge ranch and showed me best areas to hunt. I hope to draw and hunt there again some time. Enjoy your hunt.

Yes,I received the letter last week. I'm very excited for this hunt. What unit did you hunt? I'm in 58. What was your choice of firearm if I may ask? I may use a 243.
Thanks

A .243 will be just fine. Accuracy is the most important thing. Well and a decent bullet. You can get away with a crap bullet for the most part with antelope.

Well back from my first antelope hunt in NE NM. Played hide & seek with this buck for 1.5 hours and finally caught up to him and got my shot at 150 yards or so. Had a great time the last few days. Even watched a badger nab a prairie dog in front of me and eat it. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me for that shot.

Not really, there were 2 public and 5 private tags for this given ranch (which was a combo of state trust land and rancher land). Ranch was nearly 25000 acres. My hunting partner and I had the two public draw tags. I met the private hunt guys two days prior to the hunt. The rancher wanted the private guys and public guys to stay separate. We hunted the east portion and the private hunt guys hunted the western portion. They had a larger portion in terms of acres but they had more guys in their hunting party. I'm curious to how much they paid for the private tags. I didn't ask. My hunting partner did bring the Game and Fish regs booklet along and it actually states that on these public hunts that take place on ranches and leased state trust land, that the hunters are to have access to the entire ranch. Nonetheless, I found three groups on Thursday scouting the parcel of land to the east and kind of monitored the antelope late on Friday afternoon so that I'd have starting positions for Saturday morning. We stalked for almost 1.5 hours and finally got our shots on Saturday morning. You could tell the antelope were getting nervous after a few days of increased activity on the ranch, There probably hadn't been this many folks at one time on the ranch for some time. Their eyesight was amazing. They lock in and stare at 700 yards. I ran the odds for this hunt. Less than 10% draw. I got a lucky draw. I do know guys in NM that have never drawn in 20 years. I feel lucky that we drew and we had a great hunt.

I know I'm late to this thread but I just wanted to say congrats on the great bucks and thanks for taking the time to share your success. I am putting together my 2016 game plan now and any info helps. Anyone have success in unit 29?

Don't know much about 29. Are you putting in for public or private hunt? I run a spread sheet of odd for these hunts. Most of the public rifle draws for lopes are less than 10 % chance of drawing. The bow draw odds are better if you bow hunt. Tougher hunt but hunt from blinds and near water.

Public. I can use rifle or bow, just really haven't decided. Maybe second choice bow, first rifle.
