Hey guys been doing some reading on here and decided to join in. I have been a whitetail hunter forever but never hunted any western game. I am young(24) husband and father of a 9 month old boy. I have been on Archery talk and Texas Bowhunter for quite awhile now. I am spending most of my spare time reading, reading, making phone calls, and more reading for a 2017 mule deer hunt for my brother and I. This will be our first muley hunt for both of us. My original plan all along has been to book an outfitter in Wyoming on a high success rifle hunt for our first one. Recently I've come across a lot of info leading me to look into a public land hunt. I know the owner of Hunters domain as he lives here locally so I was thinking instead of spending the money on an outfitter we could buy premium landowner tags for Colorado. My reading has lead me to units 66&67. Any advice for a newbie in these areas? Am I headed in the right direction or need to try another route. Really open to anything. Thanks for the add!

Welcome to the forum!

I don't know those units but with landowner tags I'm sure probably pretty good. I don't know what your budget or goals are but you could make several diy public land hunts for the same price.

Plenty of good units with high success if you spend the time to get out and glass. Most of the unsuccessful hunters don't hunt that hard. Again it depends what your trophy goals are as well. I'm not a trophy hunter per se. Any decent buck will do. I just love to hunt.

I would like to be able to take a mature buck. From what I've seen I'd really to shoot a buck 150" or bigger

Welcome, what part of the Pineywoods? I'm a Lumberjack alumni. You might look into some of the region tags in Wyoming for deer as some do not take any points to draw. Region J is mostly private so finding an outfitter or rancher who outfits is pretty easy. Some good bucks here as it is mostly private. Lots of elk so a cow hunt could be added with the deer.

I'm an east Texas native, Carthage here... I hunt region T in Wyomingevery year for deer and iv always been successful, DIY is tougher, but that's what I do. I could set you up with a guide that is fair priced.... But the walk in areas hold some really nice deer
