Hi all,

I'm brand new to the site and Wyoming. Qualified for my resident general elk/deer license this year but didn't meet the requirements in time to put in for the draws. I've done some scouting in Units 9, 110, 6, and 21 and have a pretty good grasp for opening week of rifle season. However, I'm currently trying to plan an archery trip for 2017 and where I should try to draw. I'd like to hear your suggestions on where you would go (put in for) based on my experience and limitations.

So first off this year will be my first time doing any type of western hunting - I grew up in Virginia hunting whitetails out of a treestand. I'm 32, in good shape, and have no concerns putting miles on boots. Due to a sporadic work schedule I would guess I'll be hunting alone half the time. I don't have access to horses and do not own an ATV at the moment. This will be a DIY hunt on public land. I have no experience hunting around wolves/bears. Not saying I'm not willing to...just have no experience on do's and don'ts. As far as hunting goal--mainly to be around plenty of bugling elk with a goal of taking just about any 6x6.

Welcome to the forum. In your situation, your best option is to hook up with a mentor who will show you the ropes. Talk hunting whenever you can, and you will be surprised at how many guys are willing to help you out and take you along. You can get great input on this forum, but there is a huge learning curve, and nothing beats boots on the ground. As a resident, you will be close enough to do a lot of looking around, and you won't have a lot of money invested along the way. Don't wait for the season, but spend as much time as you can getting out of the house and seeing what the outback looks like.

Welcome. Those units get hit pretty good but are worth the hunting. 6 is a tricky area, mostly private and the state sections get hit hard for elk. If a resident now you can buy your general tags still for this year's seasons. As a resident put in for the limited quota tags with good access, I won't mention them cause I want to draw them next year. You're on the right track. The farther from Cheyenne you get the less orange you will see in the mountains. The LQ deer tags are really worth it in the Snowy Range now, great bucks are being taken on them.

Thanks wy-tex. I pretty much ruled out 6 after a scouting trip. I'm know elk are there but for a general area there's not enough space to go around. I'm definitely putting in for the LQ tags next year...just trying to get a jump start on research.
