One of my best friends lives in Portland and wants to get into hunting. He's hunted pheasants, grouse, and geese, but has never had the opportunity to big-game hunt. Starting out, he just wants to take something with a rifle and put some meat in the freezer. What would be his best chance for success?

Your friend would do well to find some kind of a mentor. Trying to head to the woods without any experience is hit or miss at best. Attending seminars at sportsman shows reading good books on the subject will certainly help. Maybe for the first time or two go out with a reputable outfitter to gain the knowledge needed to be successful. That's not to say that you can't be successful on your own if you are willing to put in the time and be willing to eat tag soup for a year or two. Good luck, hunting hard and not getting discouraged will eventually pay off.
