Hi all, I just wanted to take the time to say hi and introduce myself. My name is Brady and like the title says, I'm new to hunting and am in Colorado. I'm a high school Special Education teacher by trade with an old soul. Been in Colorado now for 7 years, grew up in Northern California. Formerly a History teacher. With that being said, I'm the guy who still believes in quality over quantity as my first rifle that I just purchased this last summer is older than I am, a 1973 Remington 700 ADL in .30-06. I'll be heading out for my first elk hunt in Colorado game unit 18/181, 4th season, and any assistance is greatly appreciated. I have read quite a bit on here and as a teacher, I'd rather be prepared for anything and everything especially with the warm weather as of late. Thank you to all who have a passion for wildlife, conservation, and preservation. Onward and upward!!!

Brady

Thanks Slugz! This will be my first hunt EVER and so far, this forum has provided a significant amount of information that you just can't get elsewhere...

Hopefully. As a teacher, I have researched our area with migration patterns and wintering locations, but with the warm weather, we may be in t shirts. Do you gents have any input on GMU 18/181? Would love to just get some access points of where to enter, etc.. thanks guys

Welcome to the forum.

I can't help much with that unit but since you are going to be hunting 4th season remember that those elk have been chased now for 3 months going on 4 by the time that the 4th season rolls around so you might need to look further away from roads and people to find them.

Good luck on the hunt.

Welcome to the forum. I can tell you that your Remington 700 will do everything you ask of it and still be going strong for another 40+ years.

Thanks Gr8bawana, I know it's not much. But, I was putting it inside the same whole at 50yds while sighting it in with new optics. I think I got a good one here!!!

Prioritize 1) unpressured area 2) with feed in that order.......it should be a very different hunt in there this year fourth season due to the lack of white stuff.......if your crazy motivated.....I'd enter from the east and get into the Troublesome Creek drainage. There are then some high points down there you can glass from and cover some area. Be careful of the beetle kill and high winds.

same boat. I'm a total newbie...dragging my three teenage boys into this. Oh, and I live in Parker too. We ended up in 191, but didn't see any cow. I did see a buck on the first day of 2nd, but no shot. We spent most of the time trying to get my twins on these doe we kept seeing, but they we're really elusive and couldn't get a shot opportunity. We were in 191 but the boys get to expand to 7, 8, 9, 19, and 191 for extended youth hunts. Not sure if we should go back to the same spot or look elsewhere next weekend for the Doe.

Thank you Slugz, that gives me a direction of where to go. I have printed out maps off of CDW and that western side of 18 seems to be part of the winter elk migration. For the Troublesome Creek drainage, is there a specific access point? Forest service roads? Etc.? Thank you again for the intel, hopefully the snow comes in next week!
