Hello All !!!
We will be moving to the Canon City area in about 2 weeks. We are a die hard bow hunting family.
We have been looking forward to moving West for a number of years. It is myself , Wife and 2 sons 10 and 12.
I am a life long hunter from the deep South.

The only experience I have hunting in the West is a Mule Deer hunt in SD and a few trips shooting PDogs.

Any tips on where to start GMUs 58,581,86,59 and 691 are all right where I will be living......

I have no problem with a back pack hunt into a wilderness area........

Not looking for any ones honey hole. Just some good starting points...... Thanks Davie

Of those units only 86 is over the counter for archery elk. You can buy a cow and either sex tag but it cost you as you are not a resident for 6 months and willl have to pay nr prices this year. The draw is in April so you will want to establish residency ASAP to be a resident for the draw. 86 is busy and steep but archers do kill. Elk can be found at treeline or close to it. I watched a herd of 15 the other day, above treeline.

Thanks everyone !!!! Just got here this week and been busy trying to find a house !! I'm just going to small game / coyote hunt this year while scouting as much as possible. It will be the first time in over 17 years I won't be chasing deer with a bow come Sept.

I wouldn't rule out 82 archery. Im pretty sure its still OTC. PM me if you end up going in for elk and welcome to Colorado.
