Hello Everyone,

I drew the early archery tag (Sept. 1-14) for New Mexico Unit 49 this year. Does anyone have any information on this unit. I have contacted the Forest Service and ordered maps and found a couple of areas where roads are closed. My initial plan is set up a basecamp and then spike camp out into areas with closed roads. I have never hunted New Mexico before and if anyone has any information on what to expect in this unit I would greatly appreciate any thoughts, suggestions, or advice.

Thanks,

Been a while since I hunted there. Back before outfitter welfare.

If you found some closed roads that is the only place I'd hunt. That unit is the worst I've ever experienced when it came to grouse hunters and ATV tourists. Taos is very close and many sight seers love to visit, drive around and hike. Hell we used to joke one minute at what looked like a remote hillside there'd be a grampa with a walker up there! I also found fresh ATV tracks in most of the off limits areas there. So even if the roads are closed in some spots, don't be surprised.
