my name is Ed and I live in Albany, Oregon. I've lived in Oregon since I was 14 (1972). Started hunting when I was 15. Shot my first Blacktail that year. I look forward to hunting season each year. Hunted with a guy my age all those years until 4 years ago- Pancreatic Cancer. A real loss. We use to hunt with another friend- same age. He had family genetics that took him at 42- another loss. Both were native Oregonians with fishing and hunting in the blood. I've been hunting and fishing alone since they've gone. I think it would be a waste to stop as I know I have much to pass on from the lessons they taught me- patience being at the top of their lists.

I've spent these last few years really taking every opportunity to take my kids- all grown up now, out with me fishing and hunting as schedules allow. Lots of memories to recount, and new ones to add.

I have been a subscriber and reader of the EHJ and EBJ as well as watching the shows when I have access. I have met some of the Eastman family and crew at the Sportsman's Shows.

I just learned that I have drawn a fairly coveted tag this year. It was a fluke, I have some deer points, but according to the Oregon Tag Guide, not nearly enough to draw the tag. I use the hunt as first choice assuming I would not draw, and end up with a point and my second choice High Cascades Hunt.

Oh, well. I can't not go because Lord know if I'll ever get the chance again- I sure don't want to blow the points either.

I know the chance of running into anyone that has hunted in the Trout Creek Area / Whitehorse Unit is slim, but I'd appreciate any tips on where I might tag up this year.

Thanks, Ed

Welcome to the forum. I've never hunted the area, but I am sure there are a few from Oregon that will offer some advice. Stay tuned.
Additionally, I'm sorry for your lose as well.
I hope you'll stick around and share on the forum.

Good intro and welcome. Is your "fairly coveted" tag the Whitehorse muzzleloader tag or the TC rifle tag? Either way congrats.

Welcome to the forum!

( From the land of many [emoji200] s and tall, genetically modified [emoji535] )

I think you'll find a bunch of really helpful sportsfolks with a variety of perspectives and, most importantly, experiences.

My condolences for your losses; I have lost close relations way too soon, so can relate.

A number of Oregonians on here; as you spend time with the group, you'll connect.

Ok, I'm officially a putz:
100 SERIES BUCK DEER
TROUT CR MTS (168A) Successful for 119A 09-07-2018
W HIGH CASCADE (119A

Reread the notification when conibear asked which tag I drew. I did not draw Trout Creek Rifle. Repeat- Did not draw this tag. I don't know how I misread the result. Maybe I better start carrot juice before I buy my tag. I am sorry to get you all excited for me. In a way, I'm relieved as it gives me more time to russle-up a qualified partner to go. I have a bit of a hard time considering my wife or son to go. It is pretty remote country and getting stuck alone or with someone not able to pull their weight could make things worse.

I'm not troubled hunting the Cascades, so that is the bright side of this embarrassing SNAFU. So I ended up with another 100 series points (8 Total- 10 Antelope) Things could be worse.

Thanks all for replying.

Nice catch and don't worry. With your 8 points apply for Steens and you'll have just as good of a hunt as Trout Creek.

Welcome Ed, I also drew high Cascade as second choice. I have been doing that for decades and have had some success. I could learn a little about patience myself! Taking my kids hunting has been a big priority for me the last decade. They are getting older now and I’m not sure how much longer they will continue to hunt, the lack of animals has them discouraged and they have plenty of other things to do.
I grew up hunting Blacktails from Stayton to HooDoo. Maybe someday we could meet up on thi mountain and swap stories. I still go that way often.

Welcome. Sorry for your loss of hunting partners. I know you stated you made an error and did not draw the tag. But just for informational purposes, don't expect a lot of info on the Trout Creeks. It's not that people aren't willing to share info. it's just that hardly no members have drawn that tag, thus no info. available. Hope you draw it one day. I am considering a traditional archery hunt down there. 'good luck in the High Cascades....
