Shock collar...Tracking equipment...then you need to find a mature dog to run him with on some chases so it gets the idea of what the heck its supposed to chase. 7 weeks is still to young to do any real chases with yet, but you could get some lion scent and put it on rags, drag it around the yard or woods..then use hot dogs or something of the sort as a treat at the end. Just get it used to knowing the scent its supposed to chase. As it gets older you will need to break it off of deer and elk.. which depending on the dog can be easy or a real pain in the A**. Hounds are a blast, but also a big investment if you want to successfully chase cats. I have never just ran a single dog...might want to look into buying an older dog that is already trained to help you out in the long run.

Just what mntnguide said, probably need an older dog to run him with and don't let him go until you know the lion is jumped, that will save some headaches and deer chases. You can walk him on a leash if you find a track until you jump the lion than see how he acts if he shows interest and want to chase let er buck. Pretty much the same for bobcats and coyotes. If you have questions just ask, hopefully this helps you bag a lion.

thanks for all the info guys. puppy comes from parents who are lion dogs. he is 8 weeks old today. i am working on basic commands and just spending as much time with him as i can. when is the appropriate age to start scent training with hot dogs? anything else important i should be doing this early. thanks again for the info. i cant wait to get him out

Some dogs will run at 8 months, those would be the studs. You can run him with other dogs at anytime, but they won't keep up and will come back. Some dogs show interest young and some it literally takes a couple years and one day it clicks and they go crazy. Just don't push him to hard either, but handling should be taught.
If you don't mind me asking, where you located?

Hounds are a blast. Especially when it clicks for them. It is easier to have a dog to train pups. But if that's not an option maybe you can run with some experienced houndsman. That's a picture of my female dog. We put up 3 cats today and one on Saturday. It's a spendy addiction. But once it's in your blood you are done for.
