Hello,

I am obviously new to the forums here and currently live in MI. I have a couple trips planned for out west over the next couple years. Next year I plan on archery hunting Elk in CO with an OTC tag. The year after that I plan on hunting WY antelope and currently have 9 points for that.

My biggest question is how are the roads ? Here in MI, the forest roads can be dicey, but usually manageable. Do I need to take any special precautions ( i.e tire chains, etc ? )

Thanks

Welcome. Always come prepared for anything. I always carry chains and a tow cable. Axe and shovel. A handyman jack is pretty useful.
These things don't take up a lot of room so no real reason not to have them. Here in Eastern Oregon you have to watch these dry dirt roads. A heavy thunder shower can make them pretty slick, no real slick. You want good tires and by that I mean something that can withstand sharp rocks. I don't necessarily go for the real heavy lugged off road tires, but want something that will stand up to some rough conditions. What type of vehicle are you bringing?

I have a Nissan Frontier 4x4 with the offroad package. It is great when I take it off roading in MI, but want to be as prepared as possible 1200+ miles from home.
