Hi everyone

Just wondering what everybody's thoughts on the new 5 year structure. Mostly about the preference points. Will the point creep ever end if nothing changes? I'm kinda new to this whole point "game", but it does seem like I'm never going to get to go hunting deer unless maybe I apply for a unit that required like 3 less points than I have. (Applied to a unit with what I thought was having a extra point - it jumps 3 points this year and now I'm 2 behind). Haha. How does a guy win this battle?

The key is not chasing high-profile units that take a lot of points to draw. It's simple, demand for deer and elk units with high success rates or big trophy animals is much greater than the supply of tags to be given. Point creep is not going away and there is nothing that can be done to make a 20 point unit work down to say become a 10 point unit unless trophy quality drops substantially to make demand that much lower. The solution is to pick a unit that you can draw and go hunt.

The units that take less points are creeping up too. Im pretty focused on ML deer hunt. 2 years ago I had 2 points and it took 3, last year I had 3 and it took 5. I will see what happens next year.

I completely understand what your saying. I'm not chasing a high-profile unit by any means, i only have 6 points. And I understand a 20 point unit is not going to drop to 10. But some these lower units are taking leaps and bounds in the point creep. The unit I applied to went up 2 points in one year. And I get one for applying. Lol. So maybe I am chasing a high- profile unit after all cause by the time I catch it again it will be a 20 point high profile unit to draw. I was just saying the point game is frustrating. I like hunting not just sitting at home with some points. But I don't understand why i should have to apply to a unit that required 3 points when I have 5 to draw a tag. But that's what its looking like. Just want to get rid if these points and hunt. Sorry guys - rant done

Just this year I know of a 300"+ buck, a 250+" buck, and 4 others that went over 200" with one that went 220". A friend got a heavy 180" on a leftover tag and I hunted a 210" non typical all season and just could not close the deal. All these bucks came out of units that take 0-2 pts to draw.

Maybe you boys are lookin in the wrong places :)....

That's awesome man. I know I'm looking in the wrong spot. Haha. I feel like taking a map of Colorado, putting it at a 200 yards, shooting it with the rifle, and wherever the bullet hits, hunting THERE...

I'd probably miss the map. Lol.

Well if you shot high and hit south wyo you might be on to somethin!

Not trying to be a smart ars but get out and hunt as I would say your odds are better of getting a big buck if you hunt a low point unit 4 times in 8 or 9 years rather than chasing one that all the mags say has the best "potential". Great thing is that big bucks come out of every area and unit in the state so dont get too tied up on units and go out and hunt even if you leave a few points on the table.

For me - I will never get more than one point for either deer or elk here in Co (the buck in the profile pic was out of a 0 pt unit). I am getting some pts built up in wyo, nv, az, and ut that some day if I get the time I will have to figure out.

Also it will never be for this west side of the divide kid but the eastern plains has some tags that are not that hard to draw if you can pony up for a outfitter can produce big bucks.

Need to consider you were/are chasing a unit on the rebound.
