I got a call yesterday from Nevada Fish and game saying someone had turned in their non resident 061-071 early bull elk tag. I was next in line to get the tag. I am just starting to research the unit and was wanting to get some information about this hunt from anyone who has hunted it in the past or knows the area. Any info would be greatly appreciated. PM me or email me at [email protected] . Thanks in advance.

My advice is to put your time in scouting and have one picked out for opening day. I had the same tag a few years ago and noticed when they were pressured hard and the weather changed they headed north to the border. Good luck on the hunt.

Late Hunt 061-071

I recently retired from the Navy in Fallon, NV and I drew a late season Cow Elk tag for area 061-071. It takes six hours to get to the area, and I have physical limitations that prevent me from getting out to the area to scout a great deal. I've only been living in Nevada for two years and I haven't had the time to get out to Elko. I was hoping I could get some pointers from people that may have hunted the area before. I would really like to have a successful hunt.

Currently I'm looking at the south facing slopes of Merritt Mountain and north towards the McDonald creek. How are these areas as far as late season is concerned? Should I be scouting closer to the Idaho border? I am going on my last chance scouting trip this weekend. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
