Hey guys

A buddy is looking into this round for hunting Antelope, Mule deer and Elk.

Please post the positive and negative of this round. Seems there is a lot of positive talk on it but the bullet just seems small. He has been a die hard 300 win mag fan forever so in comparison it seems it would just not have knock down the 300 has.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have one. Haven't killed anything with it. But I know several guys that have killed deer and antelope with it. Awesome flat shooting gun. Plan on shooting a mule deer with it this year

I've got a 260 Rem Kimber Montana which I love. It might be a bit light for a 400 yd elk cartridge, but for deer there can't be much better. The 6.5 bullets just flat kill stuff. They tend to be accurate, do well in wind, and expend a lot of energy in the target.

This last year my wife and I shot three deer with my 260 and the furthest one made it was about 40 yards. The 6.5X284 will run about 100-150 fps faster in most loadings, and with a 130 or 140 AB or other premium bullet I wouldn't be afraid to tackle elk out to 3-400 yards.

Plusses - accurate, moderate recoil, fun to shoot.

I also shoot the 260 Rem. Awesome on Whitetails. I have been thinking about the 6.5x284. Maybe someday. If I were Elk hunting I would stick with the 300. JMO

IKIC, my buddy runs the 6.5X284 in a Cooper. That thing is sweet. I will strongly consider the caliber in the future, even for elk.

As far as being small 1/2mm more diameter and you are at 7mm.

"Since the mid 1990's the 6.5x284 has dominated 1000 yard competition" Nosler reloading guide 5th edition. Nosler shows 3100fps with a 125gr partition.

What more to you need to know! LOL

What exactly is 125 drain? Are you draining the oil out of your truck or something? HAHAHA! Whats wrong with 125 gr in a 6.5? I have killed lots of deer with a 100 gr from a 243. Would you prefer a 140 gr partition loaded with 50.5 gr of LR22 at 2860 fps? Its the most accurate load Nosler tested. It shoots partitions and is accurate to 1000 yards, That should be good enough for a deer, elk, or antelope! lol

Nothing I guess. Stupid spell check! I can't change it now. Your reply won't be funny! Ha

I guess I'm a 165gr-180gr guy.

The bullet is not really that small. A lot of guys go to the woods with their 140 Corelokts and 270 Winchesters. I'm running a 140 Berger out of my 6.5x284 at 3015 fps. That kicks the pants off anyone's 270 and the 130 JLK would perform even better. The 6.5x284 is a very accurate, flat shooting, light recoiling but yet hard hitting round. You can get Lapua brass for it too which is a huge plus. There really aren't any negatives to it. This is also coming from a die hard 300 Winnie fan. Here's what the little 6.5 can do to elk: http://youtu.be/w0Fp2h6KmwI

I have two custom 260 AI's and they run close to that of a 6.5x284 in velocity and I've killed several animals out to 600 with them and one of those was a cow Elk. I run 130gr Accubonds out of them. I'd never question a 400 yd shot on anything from Elk and under with both of those rifles. Look at the Sweden they've killed millions of moose with the 6.5 Swede which is not even comparable to the 6.5x284.

The only disadvantage to the 6.5x284 is accurate barrel life. The long range competitors are getting between 900-1200 rounds before their accuracy level is exceeded. This may not even be a factor for a hunting rifle depending on how much practice one does.

I shoot a 264 win mag loaded with 140gr Accubonds at 3000fps, or more recently 140gr Berger VLD's loaded to 2950fps. It is capable of more speed but it's real accurate there and my barrel should last longer. I've been impressed with the performance on every animal I've taken with either bullet (deer and antelope) even on hard quartering shots. I would be very confident using it on elk also, just not at the same angles. Read some of the comments in my hunting pics album for more information on the terminal performance if you want.
