I had a Sharps for years, used to shoot BP competition with it. It was a Pedersoli in 45-70.

First of all...what are you planning to do with it? If you are going to hunt with it and shoot smokeless, then 45-70 is the way to go. If you want to compete with it and shoot BP, I'd still shoot 45-70. One thing to remember, unless you are buy a Shiloh or C Sharps, the factory sights will probably be junk. Sights for these type of rifles are just like optics, the good ones cost $$$$. I spent almost $1000 getting mine set up with the right sights.

If you only plan to hunt with it, the factory sights will probably be fine and the only caliber I'd consider would be 45-70. Brass is easy to get, lots of choices on bullets and dies. Anything above 45-70 (45-90, 45-110, 45-120 &50-90) are going to have a lot more recoil. Remember these were designed for BP and ranges exceeding 1000 yards, hence lots of powder and big bullets for buffalo sized game.
