Been lurking on here for awhile but just never registered. I've never hunted mule deer before mostly just whitetails and I've never gotten to hunt out west yet. Was suppose to go for elk this year but my Dad got laid off and we had to cancel. Since our crew went elk this year they wont go next year so Dad and I talked and decided maybe we go for mule deer instead. What we'd like to do is an early season archery hunt when there still in velvet. Ive been pouring over forums and MRS sections but I haven't been able to narrow it down to one state. We though about Colorado or Montana, and I'm leaning heavily towards Idaho too. Any suggestions? It'll have to be a state with OTC/leftover or draw with no points. Any Help would be appreciated.

There are a few units in Colorado that you could draw an archery tag in with no points. As far as OTC deer is draw only, an upside is most units are either sex deer so if it came down to it ur most likely gonna get deer in the freezer. In the area I hunt deer were out of velvet by the second week when I finally got off to hunt, the deer I seen the first few days sept6-8 were completely stripped and colored up. I know there were some around that were still on velvet but I didn't ever see them. I'm sure it all depends on the unit as well. I've never hunted whitetail but I've never been able to sit and wait for one to walk out, it's always been spot and stalk or walking into an area and jumping them.

If you get meat from the store then dont criticize me for having the courage to go out and kill my own meat

Thanks gymsumreaper, we are considering Colorado as that's where dad has went elk hunting. The ether sex units are a big plus as we are looking for meat more then anything till we get some more points built up. In western pa hunting whitetail with the bow is pretty much sitting in blinds and treestands but Id much rather spot and stalk like we do in rifle
