Heading out October 19 to get a few scouting days before the season opens on the 22nd. Got a few tips from friends of friends to start around Quakey Mountain. If anyone else has any advice for this unit we would really appreciate it. It's a long drive back to Wisconsin empty handed lol.

Also highly considering getting an OTC elk tag if available. Do those have to be purchased before the season starts? Enough elk in this unit to make it worth a shot?

Can't wait to get back out there!

The bulk of the elk are gonna most probably be in the Tomichi Creek area feeding on the private and working back and forth between private and NF in a low to hi ( east and west) out of the creek area type of pattern. Depending on the depth of snow the overall movement as the seasons go on will be Black Sage to Quakey to SW of Tomichi Dome.

Just walk into a store and pick one up. Season can be ongoing. If you can get one I would. You never know when a mule deer hunt will get saved by an elk cruising through.

Great info, thanks!

Any info on trails and access? Two of us are backpack hunters (I'm one of them) and plan on spike camping. We want to get far away from main trails and roads. The other two guys were thinking of bringing a quad and using that to day hunt around the base camp. I ordered my GMU map but it hasn't arrived yet and sometimes they don't give you the full picture if it's feasible to use a quad.

Getting pretty excited, we are heading out on Thursday!

I've been using the Colorado hunting atlas to get some ideas. It show mule deer summer range is mainly the eastern section of the unit and winter range is mainly western section of the unit. Are the mule deer moving to winter range already?
