Montana blaze orange clarification?

I'll be hunting Mt. for the first time. What's the situation with camo blaze orange? The regs. only state that you must wear 400 " above the waist. I have a Kyrptek Inferno vest. I have no idea if it meets the 400" threshold. You that have been there, done that. Does a camo blaze orange vest pass as meeting the Mt. regs? If a blaze orange hat is worn along with the camo vest would that be a pass?

I think most vests are over 400" and closer to 500".

as long as it's not blaze camo I'm pretty certain you're good, not sure if MT allows blaze camo, I know WY allows it.

20"x20" would be 400 in... x2 to front and back would be 800 unless they only mean 400 per side...

I just use a very lightweight mesh blaze vest over everything. It gets all twisted and bound up and probably is a technical violation due to that. If your vest is the reversible to solid Orange, that will work. Am sure the blaze orange camo and orange hat would too. 400 sq. in. is only 40" x 10", so a camo blaze orange vest about 1/2 Orange would do it too. Rule is just 400 sq. in., above waist, no other qualifier I know of.

I'm quite certain where you are headed, your intent to comply will mean more that an exact measurement, so would probably wear the camo orange and go hunting, were it me.

Based on the total $ we all spend on our hunting sports, the extra cost of a couple of new blaze orange garments is minimal. I sure don't need the wardens asking me about questionable orange garments.

Another part of the orange rule to keep in mind, is the visible at all times requirement. Put that compliant vest on and then a backpack, odds are you have a technical violation. Be in compliance while walking, drop down to belly crawl, odds are you have a technical violation...

Just wear plenty of orange and you'll be fine. Hunted MT for 25 years, every warden I've come across has been just a great person, which is not uncommon in the west, especially the intermountain part. Most times I had an all orange vest and day pack, was probably technically in violation. An orange patch on the backpack is probably a good idea for several reasons. If one is concerned, just add an orange or camo orange ball cap to the vest.

I have been told by several game wardens in Montana To Wear An Orange Vest At A minimum. A hat is actually the most visible thing you can wear. A pack can cover part of your pack if you have an orange hat on. It most likey only going to be a violation if you're doing something else shady. Be honest, pay attention to the regs, and have fun.

In the history of modern hunting millions(if not more?) animals have been harvested with humans wearing "orange". Wear more if your not sure, there's so much more involved that actually translates into a successful hunt than "too much" orange.
Remember ... "orange" is so that the "monkey's out in the woods" see you ;)
just my 2 cents
best of luck

I sure am glad it's not mandatory in Idaho. simply gives the morons who would "accidently" shoot another hunter a better target for which to aim.
those who cannot tell a man from a deer are way to stupid to distinguish color differences.

First of all it isn't that hard to determine if the vest meets the 400 square inch requirement - just measure the thing. Most vests are going to be at least 15"x18" across the back and just about the same for the front panels and that's well over 500 square inches, if your vest's panels are at least that large then you don't have anything to worry about.

Second, I live in Montana and I can tell that nobody is going to stop and measure your vest, they are simply going to make sure that you have one.

And finally, I'm sure that your vest's color is fine, besides, isn't it reversible between the orange camo pattern and solid hunter orange?
