Im curious to see if anyone elses plans are going to be affected by the new changes done to the 900 series either sex antelope archery permit being listed as a first and only choice in the draw.

I know myself I always counted on drawing the 900 tag as a second choice if I didnt draw my first choice rifle tag (as a resident). I usually draw a rifle antelope every 3 years or so but this year Im burning my points for a better draw unit in Eastern Montana so we can hunt with family. Looking into the future, Im nervous of the commitment level this forces onto hunters to make the choice between keeping points in the bank or the opportunity to hunt antelope every year.

Frustrating move for sure. I seriously doubt any non residents traveling a significant distance will invest in a 900 series moving forward. They will keep their points and take their money and spend it in other states until they draw the rifle permit. That's what I will be doing anyway...

what changes? I'm confused?

hasn't the non-res always applied for the 900 and had to draw? believe that's what I did many years ago...

unless I'm confusing the numbers?

rifle antelope most of the eastern units? 900? 700?

please clarify. thanks.

The 900 Series antelope tag has to be put in as a first and only choice when filling out your application now. You used to be able to list it as a second or a third choice. So hunters who were using the 900 archery tag as a backup to a 1st choice rifle tag won?t have that option anymore.

As a Montana resident for 20 years I don't think it's a bad thing but it sure is inconvenient. I used to get it on second choice. Usually there are leftovers though, I wonder if that will change.

Has there been any info released on what they will be doing with 900 series leftovers? alt list? how to get on it etc.?
I cant imagine with needing to select as 1st choice only that there wont be a bunch left over... maybe im wrong
