Looking into the Utah youth bull elk hunt

OK, I found the answer to the question I asked about the youth hunt a couple of days ago. The harvest stats were in a hunt planner page. Got that covered.

Now the real question. My daughter and I have been talking about the youth bull hunt. We are in a unique position with her plans for this fall where she could apply for the hunt, and in the (likely) event she didn't draw, she could have a pretty good hunt in the same time slot here in Oregon. One hunt or the other in that week.

I've done some basic research: harvest success, private land percentages, herd numbers, unit map, etc. I'm also aware of the situation with the hunt taking place on the general units and not the limited entry units. Just need to decide if we should take a shot at it.

For those who might know more about the hunt, what factor(s) would you suggest to make or break the decision whether to apply, especially driving down from Oregon. Just looking for relevant decision-making points for the next few days. Thanks.

Utah's youth hunts are actually a hard hunt for a out of stater. If you don't have time to scout you are dependent on others giving you locations and conditions. I myself woudn't do it. But if you are I would look at the north slope of the Unitah's. But without knowing them they are a hard location to hunt.

Honestly, I’d just apply her for one of the limited entry hunts. The license for a youth is only like 5 bucks I think plus species fee. At least build her some cheap points. I looked at these “youth” hunts in the general units but I see nothing really appealing about them either. Honestly I don’t know of any state that really offers an appealing hunt that is catered to the youth. NM has some good youth hunts but the tags are so limited that it’s terrible draw odds. I just apply my son in the regular draws and usually the fee or license is cheaper. Honestly u could prolly have just as good of hunt in CO as that “youth” any bull Utah tag and not have to draw it !
