I have a bull and buck ML tags for unit 28/18. Our camp is just southeast of Dale Reservoir. I have hunted there in the past without much luck but meeting up with some buddies and giving it another shot. Any recommendations? Seems like coming off the top in the mornings and working through the dark thick stuff may be the best approach. I will be hunting Saturday the 9th through Wednesday the 13th and want to make the best of it. Any advise it appreciated.

I have hunted these units pretty extensively as I lived there for a few years. There are good elk herds and a great bull to cow ratio, if you see elk its likely a bull. However its a very hard unit to hunt. For elk, the best success I have had is getting up on top long ridgelines well before sunrise, Usually areas that are thick, but not what I would call dark timber. You need to be able to see a little. Then catch them moving through those tops right at sunrise. I usually use some really soft calling. Due to high pressure they are pretty call shy. The biggest problems with the dark timber here is the winds are really swirly in this unit unless there is a front coming through. You will be able to hear and smell them in the timber but never get close. Not sure if this helps, good luck.

I'm fairly familiar with area 28 and go up 2nd rifle for bull and buck. Couldn't get a cow tag?? I'm a disabled vet looking to get my son on his first elk. any information you can share is much appreciated. I've harvested a 5x5 off sheep mtn several years back, and a 5x6 mule last year, but have been skunked the past several years.

Thank you for that. I concur with your strategy, can you please share any specific areas to employ that strategy? For 18, we're thinking Parkview mtn and in 28 focusing on Byers Peak. Thoughts?
