What are the dates of the tag? I havn't looked at the leftover tags in awhile, but I think the only ones left are private land. Most of 72 is private except for Canyon of the Ancients Nat Monument. The best cow hunt I was ever on was there, but it was a January hunt after the migration. I don't think they offer that hunt this year. A Warden told me that this year there are fewer cow tags, as the herd numbers are close to what they want for this area.

Waited too Long only thing left is unit 42 Not sure how good it is?
I tried to get a 711 leftover cow tag for 4th season the same day they went online with them. None were even posted. Seems like fewer leftover tags the last few years....except for private land.

Anyone paying attention to how the tags are allocated can see more and more tags being set aside for private land only. There is entirely too much influence in the G & F Commission by the big land owners. More PL tags means more revenue for them. Selling these tags is big business here. They complain to the state about depredation by deer, elk and antelope, but won't allow hunters to help out the situation w/o a big tresspass fee. Pretty sad...and getting worse.

Colorado has a Sportsmans Roundtable for each of the 4 zones of the state. The members are appointed. There is a vacancy on the SW Roundtable that I have applied for, hope I can get appointed. Like to see what really goes on and how much input an outsider really has.

Well said CC and I hope you get that seat on the board. I have died not to try hunt in Colorado after all. I think I will go to Nebraska in dec for a muzzy deer hunt along the river.

CC, It's a mess. I've spent quite a bit of time on the phone with the CDOW. They explained their reason for additional PL tags and to a certain degree it makes sense. It's all about generating additional funds to the DOW.

Anyone want to tell me about unit 42. It has been 20 years since I hunted around Colbran. Google shows lots of gas drilling, so I am sure some areas have changed. I don't think there is any migration of elk. I use to hunt up brush creek on elk mountain. I have also hunted the Mesa and Hightower Mt. I have hunted both deer and elk in unit 42. My friend will have a bull tag and he can hunt unit 41,42,411,421,52,&521. Most of these units had left over license last year. I curious as to why, anyway too late to change. Weather has been quite severe. One year was minus 30 for several days and I was backpacked. Water became a problem, another time snow got very deep. While on elk mt I saw an airplane crash as it was going up to Vega. I don't know that I have hunted this late in the year.

When I looked on Google map I realized it had been 40 years since first started hunting around Colbran. Really don't seem that long ago. Looks like the gas people have been busy. Does anyone hunt this unit any more.
