Planning an archery hunt this sept and had originally chose idaho to hunt but I don't like the fact that I will be driving through great elk country. So, my question is has anyone hunted elk around the little belt mountains in September? How much private land is around there and how many other hunters will be in there. Don't really know to much about montana so I am looking for a little help. Thanks

There is plenty of good public access, and plenty of elk around. You will run into a few people but it shouldn't be anything you can't deal with. The quality of bulls isn't the greatest but I think you could expect to see bulls in the high 200's to low 300's and finding a big bull is never out of the question as there always seems to be at least one or two big bulls pulled every year. Be ready to hunt hard, but if you put the time in you should have a good hunt.

Thank you for the info. Montana sounds like it should be a great elk hunt and is alot closer than idaho. Is there plenty of places to pack in away from the crowds in the little belts? I've also heard good things about the Missouri breaks area, is that area all draw? And the general tag works in any general unit correct? So if nothing is happening I can move on. The montana website is kinda hard to figure out what's a draw zone and what's a general zone.

Yea the Breaks are all draw. A few of the units are close to 100% odds of drawing. MT is a terrible state to "build points" in though if you aren't going to hunt with the general tag. A long story short, if you don't hunt and send your tag back in, it costs something like $200 to get a point so don't apply for a Breaks tag unless you are willing to hunt with the general tag if you don't draw. Hopefully I didn't confuse you!

I hunted the litte belts about 6 years ago, we harvested two nice bucks, nothing trophy like, but a good hunt. We were mostly on the south end. We saw some elk, but werent really hunting elk. I watched two bulls n the spotting scope about 1000 yards out one morning, both 5 or small 6 point bulls.

I would go back, awesome country.

Anyone have any experience in southwest montana they would care to share. Numbers in that area are high but that probably also means the amount of people are high but looks like you could get away from the crowds easier.

I used to hunt with a friend a ways outside of Enis, but the last time we went the elk were gone. Fish and game said the wolves had decimated the herd.

you will want to atleast try your luck on a draw area before just purchasing an over the counter elk or combo licsense.

I got a few areas picked out as of now. Looking into the crazy mountains, bridgers mountains,, unit 560 and over by the dillon area. Anybody have any experience in any of these units or any photos anyone wants to show.

A little late but if you didn't figure out for yourself 560 is rough nasty country. Steep with blowdown and burns. Griz country too. That nasty country could turn up a nice buck or bull but you'll have to put miles in climbing up and down trying to find them. If you already did your hunt I hope it went well if not good luck!
