I've seen 3 mountain lions in the daylight in about 40 years of hunting. Seems like everywhere we hunt or camp we see fresh cat tracks and it makes me wonder just how many cats have been within say 100 yards from us in the dark that we never see.

anyone ever have a kill raided by a cat? good info for my future elk hunt. I know it happens when hunting areas with grizz, but how common is it for a lion to do.

I have never heard of a lion coming into a hunters kill. I have had a black bear pull a deer out of a tree that we had it hanging in.

I have actually watched a mountain lion follow a hunter around a side hill walking in his tracks about 50 yards behind him. I also can't count the number of times that we have walked down a ridge or along some ledges and then walked back only to see cat tracks on top of ours.

But other than that I have never been bothered by one. I just know that they are out there and will watch a human either out of curiosity or who know why.

very few times have a left game over night in the mountains but a few years ago my buddy shot a 5x5 bull with his bow close to dark, he found a solid blood trail and he wasn't all that far from camp and temp was dropping to upper 30's that night so he left it till morn. next morn he couldn't find it, with all the blood it didn't make sense to him that it wasn't dead, he called me to bring my "antler dog" up to put his nose to work. took him no more than 5 min to find it once on the trail. it was buried with dirt and leaves and branches and drug under a thick low hanging pine tree. we seen lion and bear tracks and both are known to bury kill. there was nothing left of that thing other than the head and antlers, and strands of carcass I have those antlers in my garage, he still tagged it and gave it to me, he said it was his fault for leaving it. my guess is a bear and some cubs filled up and buried it and lion inspected it after.

Been stalked by cats have only seen a handful of cats in daylight as well. Few years ago though me and my brother both killed bucks they were hanging in camp 25 yards from the road. At about 2:30 that morning I was woken up by some noises outside, my dad was also awake no one else woke up. Me and my dad are real light sleepers when it comes to hunting and stuff from years of having horses outside and always having that ear open for anything going on. But we knew it wasn't a bear was walking way to quietly then we heard the kittens making noises they walked right by the tent literally 4 feet from me. My dad asked if I heard what was going on and I said yep sounds like cats. Then we heard the female about 25 yards away calling her kittens back and headed out. The kittens were headed over to the deer they didn't touch it just walked around it for a few minutes then they left. We found the tracks the next morning. I've heard stories of guys getting animals taken from their meat poles by cats and bears. But most cats From what I've been told don't scavenge unless they are really starving. I have sat on a lion kill before hoping to see the lion as it was a big tom from the tracks but he never came in when I was there.
I've been stalked like said above going through timber or around cliff faces and came back with lion tracks in mine. My dad was stalking a buck through a dry creek bed one time and ended up having to crawl under a bunch of willows he finally said screw it and headed back and there was a lion stalking him. And I was riding horses one time to get to my hunting spot early early we would ride a ways then turn on our headlamps to make sure the horses were going in the right general direction we wanted to go. The horses started acting a little bit goofy at one point and we flipped on our lights and there was a cat coming down the trail straight towards us he boogied out pretty quick but gave us enough of a look when the lights hit him to know he was there. Horses acted goofy for another 15-20 minutes then settled down so we figured once they calmed down we were good. That was a bit of an eye opener

Oh yea there is a lot mtn lions here in California. I would expect with the lack of deer and a surplus of yahoos that trash the forest there'd be more interactions with people and mtn lions
