So whats going on with the deer numbers in R? I hunted DIY in 08 and had good success with a 150's and a miss on a high 160's. I opted out the last couple of years for other states and found out the winters, droughts and EHD have been hard on the mulies all over. I am specifically talking the northern units 50-53. Have they somewhat rebounded yet? I have no points and just buy the special any deer R. I know there are better regions and units but I know and scouted R pretty good. Thanks

During my scouting trip I didnt see anything in R, that was 3 years ago. It looks like good country though. I came across some steep canyons up North, looked impassable to me.

How far off the road did you get to kill your deer?

One thing I did note was if I ever hunted R I was going to pack into the far Western slope of the mountains down in the foothills. Try to get on a deer sneaking off the green fields.

I ain't heard much good from my buddy that lives in the area! I think every where is still in rebound mode so to speak, but when did we ever recover from the early 90's!?

We were between Bighorn lake and the foot hills. Not that far off trails we just did allot of glassing in the canyons. Yes it is rough up north with impassable terrain in spots

Yes, but the seasons differ allot of times in those areas with allot of private land between the fields and the foothills

The G&F have done a number on the deer, and it doesn't help that the young bucks are not getting a chance to mature in certain part of the region due to some out of staters (no pun intended, but there are those guys who get the tag and shoot the first two point they see). I wouldn't look to hunt here for at least three more years. I recently went to G&F public meeting and talked with some of the wardens and bioligists and i think they listened to our ideas, the number of mature bucks should be their objective number on buck to doe ratio rather than all buck to doe ratio; also it should be turned into a 4 point or better to help the area, i know its not a trophy area but there is no reason there shouldn't be really good bucks running around (there are good bucks, but not as many as there should be.)
