Went on my much anticipated late season rifle deer hunt and ended up taking a little 3 point we spotted from camp. It's pretty hard to pass on a gift buck since he was so close to the dirt road in the canyon, we only had to drag him about 20 feet. That was after having to chase him down and finish him off because of a bad shot on my part.
We put in 4 days of hunting including one day hiking to the top of Pearl Peak. All we saw was a small 3 point that I passed on because it was the first day and he was pretty high up to be packing out a small one. We didn't see any of the type of bucks we're used to seeing during this late season.
I'm guessing the deer weren't moving because the wind was relentless and howling. It stayed windy the entire time we were hunting.
I got some good pics of the mtn goats we've been watching for the last 15-20 years in the exact same area. I need to draw the tag soon because it's getting harder and harder to hike up there as I get older.
I should also have opted in for the cow elk tag when you draw this deer tag. We spotted 2 cows and 1 bull near the edge of a burn a couple of miles from camp at the base of the mountain. They would have been easy to get to. We'd never seen any elk where the cow tag is designated for until now. So I won't make that mistake again.
