La Garita Wilderness for Elk 1st Rifle

Anyone ever hunt in the La Garita Wilderness? I drew a first season rifle tag this year in 66 and want to hunt wilderness to get away from motorized competition. Looking on colorado website and interactive map looks like it holds elk.
Any general info would be appreciated

That area is one of the best in Colorado. Up around Lake City, Colorado. The hunting this year is impacted by the West Fork Fire Complex that burned 109k acres in June and July and was put out later by rain. It displaced alot of Elk and no one knows what to expect this fall after such a large fire. You need to check exactly where you are hunting and find out what impact that fire will have on our hunting and plan accordingly. Like all areas in Colorado you need to get back in there but this is a good area depending on what the fire did. Good Luck.

The update information about unit 76 is on the Colorado Park and Wildlife Web Site with Pictures. States hunting should be excellent in that area after the burn. Also has a map of the burn area, and offers refunds for those who do not want to go. Take a look.
