Kuiu Ultra 6000 question

Greetings:

I'm new to the back country hunting game and will actually be taking my first trip this fall. I've been researching like crazy to find the best pack that would suit my needs. As you can imagine...my head has been spinning. I think I have settled on the Kuiu Ultra 6000. The only reason why I am reluctant to "pull the trigger" is that once you take the pack off the frame you are left with nothing. My plan is to pack into a wilderness area and basically remove the bag and set up a base camp and hunt from there. Here is the problem...Once I remove the bag from the frame I have nothing to carry all my daily hunting essentials (food, water, rain gear, kill kit, etc.) Do any of you have any experience with this type of situation? I appreciate the help!

The 6000 compresses down completely. I've used it as my day pack after dropping camp a couple of times.

I have the icon 6000, and like BruinPoint said, once you get camp set up I use it as the day pack. In not sure the ultra will compress like the icon, so I recommend taking a look at the 7200 Icon Pro before ordering anything.

Ok...thanks guys. It was recommended by Kuiu that I could purchase the smallest version which fits on the frame and use it as a daypack. I really dont want to have to take a pack off and on while I'm out there and I don't want the added expense. I trust you guys who have actually used it. Since my hunts will probably be no more than 4 days I might just go with the smaller version. 3200?? Thanks so much!!

Why take the bag off the frame? Are you new to wilderness hunting?

I guess I am confused as to how you will hunt around camp? Are your thoughts to remove the sub 2lb bag and just have a frame to carry your needed gear and animal if you were to kill something?

Get the 6000 so you have room for your gear and deer on the hike out. That pack cinches down to nothing, so there's no need to remove it. This is my second season using this pack

Thanks to all. The 6000 it is. Now I have to figure out which one to buy. The ultra only has one pocket. How do you carry tripod and spotter?? Lash it it the outside??

I put my tripod under the side sinch straps, and the spotter inside the pack. I've been on a few backcountry trips with my 6000 and I love it. You will not be dissapointed with the kuiu ultra 6000, its extremly light, and carrys a load good. Great quality pack.

If you are an ounce counter, then the Kuiu Ultra 6000 would probably be a good choice. Weight savings is about the only advantage that the Ultra has over the Icon Pro. The Icon Pro uses the same carbon fiber frame, but has a better/more supportive waist belt and better shoulder straps. I think most people that have tried both will tell you the Icon Pro will make heavy loads more manageable vs the Ultra pack. Also, the Icon Pro has plenty of pockets and organization, if that is what you prefer. The Icon Pro pack is made of 500D Cordura, so it will be more durable and quieter than the Ultra pack.
Both packs will compress down to nothing, so you can just buy 1 bag and be set.
I have had an Icon Pro 5200 since they first came out and am very happy with it.
Hope this helps and Good Luck.

Retrieverfinder, I'm looking to consolidate some of my packs and have a nearly new Kuiu Ultra 6000 in Verde camo with a large belt and tall frame. If this is something you'd be interested in let me know and I'd be happy to send you some pictures or something? They are nice packs and like posted above are super compressible. Thanks

You guys are awesome. I think I'm going to head to their shop in Dixon and get fitted. Not sure which way I will go now but I will let them talk me into one or the other. Not sure if the weight difference is worth it. Thanks again!! Is there a way to get an automatic email when someone responds to a thread?? I don't check the site daily so I don't know if there's been a response. Thanks

Yes, black tool bar just above your first post, click on thread tools. My tripod goes on the side with legs in the short side pocket and side straps holding it tight. Spotter in vertical pocket -which I'm pretty sure is designed to hold a spotter.

FWIW, I just hunted 8 days using the Ultra 6000 and it works fine as a day pack, compresses nice and is cool and comfortable.

Just revisiting an old thread. Got to pack elk with the Ultra last month. The bag is a 3000. All things considered I wouldn't try to talk anyone out of buying one at all. If I was mostly elk hunting and planning to pack a lot of boneless meat I might look at something with better containment.

i prefer the kuiu icon 5200. it has more padding in the hip belt and shoulder straps. it compresses down very well.
