Hello. My brother has been drawn for a KY rifle bull tag and I will be tagging along as his packer! We have been on elk hunts out West, but I suspect this hunt will be much different. If anyone has any insight on what to expect or info about the limited entry areas that he must now choose from I would really appreciate speaking to you. Thank you for any help you may be able to offer and good luck in this years drawings.

Congrats!! that is a really hard tag to draw, especially as a non resident.

I wasn't so lucky:

No incite here to share, but a big congratulations on getting through the most challenging part of killing a Kentucky elk...and a non-resident bull gun tag at that!

I'm also interested in hearing about the hunt. Keep us posted.

Congratulations on the tag. study the kdfwr web site extensively.
All the harvest data is shown for the past years and a hunter can see the public land areas that have the highest harvest. Also to get an idea of what others think about our elk population trends read some of the posts on Kentucky hunting forum. Good luck with your planning and hunt.

Thanks guys.

Kentuckyhunter, Do you know anyone who might be able to shed some light on the different LEA's? We really want to make this a DIY and we must choose a LEA by July 1st I believe. I have a gazetteer on the way, maybe that will help. Thanks again.

I've read somewhere that the first restoration area is the best. I can't remember what county (or unit) that is in but you can probably find that out pretty easily.

If I were you, I would find out who the game wardens are in those units and call one along with calls to the elk biologist.

Seems like they change the Lea every year. I would focus on Boone forestland wma or elk Forrest wma. I don't know what that Lea is called but the map shows the amount of public land.
I hope you get a good bull diy. From things I've heard the guide services drive around on atvs calling each other so their clients can be led by hand and shoot what they tell you to.
The biologists and wardens might be helpful but 900 other lucky permit holders are asking the exact same thing.

My 13 yr old got a cow rifle tag two years ago and we tagged out the first evening down there. The terrain is much more open than you can imagine, as it is miles of reclaimed strip mines. There is so much grass, thus food, it is amazing. When we got to the area I thought I was standing on the prairie in the Dakotas. We saw 300 plus during our scouting and well over 100 opening day. Message me if you want more info. It is a check of a neat place down there....
