Hey Hunters,

My Grandson drew a J3 Deer Tag for the Tehama Wildlife Area (Nov 30- Dec 1). I will be taking him there for his first Deer hunt. Anyone familiar with the Wildlife Area and can provide some info it would be appreciated. I have hunted Turkey and Quail near there and have some basic info. I will contact the local Biologist, etc. soon and hopefully pre-scout. Happy Fathers Day to all you Dads and Grandfathers.

This turned out to be a great hunt. The only negative is it is only a two day hunt. I did not get any responses on the forum but was able to scout the weekend before and found 10 different bucks. Most were forks and a couple of three points. My Grandson filled his tag opening morning with a 250 yard shot.Cole's Junior Deer Hunt 024.jpg

Sorry I did not see your post earlier. I also took my grandson there on his first hunt. Fun hunt. Glad yours turned out okay! Nice buck! Congrats to the young hunter!

Very nice buck. I went with a friend 20 years ago on that hunt, it can be great if you get weather. I'm not sure why they don't give the kids a week for that hunt.

I think it is a great unit for a first time hunter. There is good access with terrain that has everything from rolling oaks to steep canyons. A 4x4 is helpful and an ATV or UTV provides additional access to jeep trails in the area. According to the Wildlife Area Manager last year was a little more challenging due to the drought conditions. The only negative from my perspective is that the hunt is only 2 days. That being said, I saw 12 different legal bucks in 2 days of scouting and 1 day of hunting.
