I believe the NDOW commisioners voted to prohibit shed antler hunting from Jan. 1st thu April 15th. You may want to check on this before you go out.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners voted unanimously Saturday to prohibit antler collecting in Nevada during a winter-spring period to reduce the stress on the elk and deer populations.

The board vote prohibits “shed hunting” from Jan. 1 to April 15.

A proposal to require a Nevada hunting license to collect antlers, which are dropped by the animals every winter, was not approved by the board.

The seasonal ban on antler collection mirrors what other Western states are doing to reduce stress on the animals during the winter months.

Nevada has not until now regulated shed hunting, which can be lucrative. Elk antlers can bring $10 a pound. A set from a trophy elk could bring $500 to thousands of dollars.

As per email on 2/5/16:

ME:

In 2014, NV was trying to implement a season on hunting for sheds. I believe the commission approved closing the shed hunting from January 1st to April 14th. But, it is my understanding that the Nevada Legislature sent the proposal back with this question:

"The proposed regulations did NOT address whether Nevada private land owners had the right to collect shed antlers on their own land. How would this possibility be worded in the proposed regulation?"

So, my question is what is the actual ruling on this proposal??

THEIR REPLY:

You are correct the legislative commission sent the proposed regulation back to the Nevada Department of Wildlife. Since that time, NDOW has not taken action on this regulation. I know there are plans in the semi-near future to move once again on this regulation. This regulation is not affective to date. So there is not a season for shed hunting.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
