I was watching Eastman's Hunting Journal T.V. show the other evening and the Eastman's did a Savage arms commercial in which Ike,Mike and Guy sported Savage rifles.
Ike's rifle looks like a Savage Lightweight Hunter, I was wondering if anyone knows what caliber it is. And why he chose it? I'm also curious about what Mike & Guy shoot, and why. Perhaps one of them can shed some light on this.

I believe Guy use to shoot a Weatherby in 30-338 caliber but not sure what he shoots now. They probably shoot Savage's now because of their sponsorship. Don't know what caliber Ike and Mike shoot.

I think Guy also used a Dakota rifle as well. I'm not sure on Mikes rifle, but I know from his videos he likes a 7 magnum.

Good morning and Happy New Year. I shoot a couple of Savage's. The one in the commercial is the Light Weight Hunter in a 6.5 Creed Moor. It is my rifle of choice except on big animals like Elk. Guy likes his Long Range Hunter in a 6.5 284. He also uses a 270 WSM. Mike uses a 7mm as he has been for 50 years or more. Hope that answers your questions. Good luck this year in the field and draws. ~Ike

Thanks Ike, I've been trying to decide what caliber to order in a Savage lightweight hunter. Either a 6.5 Creedmoor or 7mm/08.
I think I'll order the Creedmoor. I like the ballistics. More energy and velocity over 300yds. than either the .308 or the 7mm/08.
Lots of great bullets available as well.

I like my 7mm-08 savage lwh. check out the accubond long ranges they have a super high bc makes for a flat trajectory..

The 6.5 Creedmoor has some pretty impressive numbers at long range. It holds it's velocity and energy longer than a .284, it was designed from the ground up as a long range target cartridge. But, like you said there are no flies on a 7mm/08 either. And there are a plethora of bullets for both. A deer or antelope can only be killed so dead, a few FPS probably doesn't matter in a hunting situation.

What kind of muzzle velocity are you getting with the Creedmoor?
I don't own one, I was just comparing published velocity & energy numbers that I found on a reloading website. And Hornady's info.
I'm planning on buying a Savage LWH, just still on the fence as far as calibers go. I don't think you can buy a 5 1/2 lb. rifle anywhere, that's in the same price range as the Savage. Do you own one Elkoholic? If so, how do you like it?? Thanks.

No, I don't but I do admire the cartridge. I love Savage rifles but with a 20" barrel you are going to be sacrificing a lot of speed for that less weight. I was going to argue with you about your '6.5 Creedmoor holding it's velocity and energy longer than a 7mm' comment but now I'm getting out of the mood, haha.

Might check the Savage long range hunter. I have a 26" barrel in the 25-06. Not sure what other barrel lengths or calibers it comes in. Second hand load I tried after breaking in, 5 shot 1" group at 200 meters. 100 gr sierras with 52 gr of R-22 powder. Flat shooting gun. Little light for elk but I have taken 2 with it. One at 50 yards and 1 at 350. Bullet placement was always preached to me by my Dad. We shot all our deer with 222 growing up. We did a lot of prairie dog shooting with them. All we ever used were hand loads to save money 40 years ago.
