So I was taught by an old timer a while ago that 6.6 grains per pound of draw is the optimum weight. That being said pulling 70# that would come out to a 462 grain set up. For reference/comparison I'm shooting a FMJ 322 grn, broadhead 100 grn, nock 12 grn, fletching 18 grn and insert 16 grn for a 468 grn set up.

All things being correct...spline, FOC, length, bow tuned.......what the general consensus on that?

Reason I bring it up my son put together some arrows and he is only pulling 60#........but just watching him shoot and I think they are dropping too much due to being very overweight based on the calculation.

I'd go lighter if you don't like the trajectory. I go by 6 grains per pound of draw myself, but that's because that's law in the state I live in for hunting arrows.

I think it all depends on what you are looking for. I think with your setup you are right on the money with your arrow weight. I like a mid to upper middle weight arrow because they hit hard and still carry good speed. Also, I would not be worried about the arrow dropping a lot for your son if he is after added penetration. I actually shot my first big 230lb field dressed buck when I was 13 with a PSE deer hunter shooting about a 350gr arrow 165fps and used steel force 85 gr saber tooth broad heads and had a pass through. I felt like I should have made a commercial. Hahah. Moral of the story is, he can get away with a lighter arrow if he uses a good cut on contact head. In my opinion.
