Hey all

First time poster here wondering if i could get any guidance. I am moving to Boise in a few weeks and will be there until at least December and I am looking chase some elk around in September. I have been on a few rifle hunts in Colorado but this will be my first time in Idaho. I will be hunting solo and just looking for some information on general areas. I was looking into either the Sawtooth or Mcall area. Dose anyone have any Info on these areas. Not looking for any secret spots, just looking for ideas, and what the elk herd is like in these areas. Also if anyone out there is also a solo Idaho hunter looking for company I would love to join! I've been hunting my whole life so believe me its tough to sit here and ask people where to go. i just wont have anytime to do any scouting. Planning on driving out, dropping off my stuff and heading to the mountains. Any Info would be greatly appreciated, and if i get lucky i'll give out some meat

Thanks guys

Buck

The best advice I have received is get off the beaten path and go further than anyone else and you'll find the elk. I was in the same boat just moved to the Mtn Home area.

It doesn't always take going further than everyone else. ..get to know the area. .get to know the elk. ..I know plenty of areas where the elk live closer to the road than one may think. Sawtooth zone is probably sold out of tags..especially for a non-resident which u are still considered. Narrow down where you want to hunt, and just have fun. You don't necessarily need to home the furthest to kill elk...ud be surprised, just depends on the area. Good luck and most of all just enjoy it

Sawtooth zone is coming back some, but during the height of the wolf population, the success rate was terrible. I saw a good size herd this summer with a lot of calves, so that was encouraging. Some years in the past, you would see a herd of 25 or 30 cows and 2 calves. Fish and Game website has pretty good info on success rates and stuff. They just posted some stats and the outlook for the year, might be helpful. Unit 39 has a lot of elk, and also a lot of people who hunt it because it is so accessible, but it is not open for bowhunting in September, they have a November hunt.

McCall is a big area depending on where you go from there, but I am sure you can find some spots there. Fires are a problem in some areas. If we stay dry, they may burn until October, and that will impact some road closures and such. Good luck, and welcome to Idaho.
