ID Unit 1 OTC Deer

I have done quite a bit of research on this hunt. My buddy and I plan on executing it in either Nov. 2013 or Nov. 2014. We want to hunt low for whitetails making spike camps until we can get up high and try to get on some mulies. And we mean high. We want to get up into some nasty country as we figure the whitetails have probably taken over everywhere else and driven the mulies up into the nastiest terrain available. Correct? We were sad to realize we would have to have the "whitetail tag" and have to hunt in Oct. in order to be able to fill our tags with bears. Our main focus is up high for mule deer, so we can't. Correct? And that is heavy bear country right? But if we can shoot a 130" whitetail or bigger, we will take it. Probably more like 145" standard for mule deer. Is that realistic? We may or may not have horses, I'll have to talk to my buddy about that. Any info even remotely helping us out is greatly appreciated.

You will probably end up just hunting whitetail if I had to guess. The times I have hunted Idaho whitetails (albeit never in unit1) the whitetail were up even higher than the mule deer in November. I dunno specifically where the mule deer winter up there but I'd guess not way up in the high country. Just my thoughts based on what I've personally seen. Hope somebody can elaborate more. just buy a regular deer tag and hunt muley in November. you will probably be in snow up high in the nasty country.

There can be alot of snow in november depending on the year. I would go at the start of the season if you want to go in the higher mountains and even then some may be snowed in. The Mule deer population is generally pretty low in the panhandle. There are some but its mostly white tails.
