Am considering hunting mule deer in southeast montana--rifle hunt toward the end of season. Have somewhat narrowed the area down to around Powder River or around Ashland. Any opinions on these areas; and, info about how to hunt these areas would be appreciated. Since I am a non-resident, would also like suggestions on where to stay so would not have to spend a lot of time driving to/from hunting. If you would rather send a PM, glad to receive them. Thanks

Anywhere down in that SE corner has a lot of deer. Just don't expect to kill anything big. I like to hunt earlier than later. I seem to find bigger bucks earlier. But since you will be going later I wouldn't pass on anything over 150. I don't know where to tell you to stay since I always stay in my wall tent. Don't over look the BMA's. I have found some really good hunting on BMA's but a lot of people that I talk to don't even look at them for some reason. Bring good glass and use it.

Thanks for the info. Have done bit of research about BMA's--just enough to know that some require permission.
Any suggestions about which BMA might be better to look into in that part of Montana? Thanks

Every few years there are some giants that are taken down by Ashland. but on average I would say you would be nuts to pass up a 160ish buck. The area down there has good genetics but lots of hunting pressure.

Good luck, it should be a fun hunt!
