Thinking about putting in for an early rifle buck tag for this unit. Anyone hunted it during the early seasons? Wondering about buck numbers and size of bucks. I can handle the rough terrain. Just thinking about trying for a different hunt this year. Thanks in advance!

Me too. And there are only 20 tags...

I've never hunted there before, but it is about the only high country mule deer tag you can draw w/o pts.

Maybe I can dissuade you guys by mentioning that the success rate for that hunt code has averaged 11% over the last five years.

Thanks! I'm glad to hear there are deer up there. I was pretty sure there would be a ton of hikers. That is right about the time the aspen start to turn, and everybody heads up to independence pass. And, even though there are only 20 tags, they are for the same time as the muzzleloader season, so I'm sure there will be hunters too. Maybe if I hike back far enough...

Still trying to decide between unit 47 high country bucks and unit 45 for both deer and elk in the muzzleloader season. Either way is going to be ton of fun!

I've archery hunted that area a few years. The tag is good for 43,47,471. We always ended up back in 43 because there just seems to be better deer over there than 47 for whatever reason. If you muzzleloader hunt you may consider that tag. Easy to draw and good for all 3 units I believe.

I did the 471 early season hunt and it was amazing how many hikers, 4 wheelers, dune buggies, etc you will see. Beautiful country though !

A friend had the high country buck tag for 47 last year and did alot of scouting and got about a 185 in velvet. The only trouble was that was the only nice buck he came accross the rest where small 4's and 3's. Lots of bunny huggers in that country too.
