One thing I find very sad is the family who had him before selling him to my friend who is a horn collector/buyer. I view the deer as being more of a family heirloom and could never part with him.
I agree that I would like my trophies to be passed down indefinitely, but the reality is that there's no emotional link beyond a generation or two.

Yeah, I have to agree. I have no idea what will happen to my game heads when I'm gone. They won't have the same meaning to anyone else and they'll most likely be sold or hauled to the dump. Just a fact of life I suppose. My stepsons don't hunt and have no interest in the heads. I will leave all my heads to my godson who is also my hunting partner but he has no room to hang them and has mounts of his own. Maybe he'll keep one to remind him of me? Oh well...

I kind of agree but I would be an exception. I wish I had some heads from relatives of a 100 years ago. The only keepsake I've got from my great grampa is a set of big whitetail sheds I use for rattling. My gramma told me when she was a girl her mom made my great grampa haul off most of his antlers and throw them in a ditch. She remembers the hay wagon was heaping with antlers. My great, great uncle also had a bunch of whitetail racks (some were huge) that I wanted but they were stolen from a shed on his farm in northern WI when he was in the hospital for 3 days back in the 1990's.

Yeah, it would be very cool to see some the game heads or antlers from 100 years ago. Even the old photos are great.

I remember hanging out in my grandfather's den and seeing his game heads when I was young. I just loved being in that room. When he passed he left me one of his deer heads. The buck was killed in 1931 in Oregon at a time when he was working in the woods as a logging superintendent. The mount was showing it's age and I had it remounted about ten years ago. It is one of my most prized possessions. I hope someone in my family takes care of it when I'm gone, though it may not hold the same meaning as it does to me.
