I'm an average joe who likes to get away from the stresses of work and spends a lot of my free time in the summer and early fall scouting new areas to hunt. I like sharing my adventures with those who care to listen.
Hopefully I can use the last 30 years of hunting deer and elk to encourage others that there is good hunting to be had around the West.
I have spent most of my time hunting Utah and in the past 20 years, have either hunted or scouted a dozen of the current 29 Utah general season units.
Now days, I mainly trophy hunt for Mule Deer and am selective on what I want to use my tag on. I hunt general season elk every few years to keep the freezer filled. Times are good right now, I have been lucky enough to kill my two biggest bucks to date in the past three years.

Welcome and congrats on on the buck you took this year. I look forward to seeing what you turn up over in Utah.

Non resident looking to perhaps hunt Utah for an OTC combo tag since I didn't draw anything in my home state. I find Utah's DOW page somewhat confusing to say the least. Just looking for some help on when those tags are available and what's the best unit to hunt that tag in? Not looking for a trophy at all just some meat and to get my son outdoors before he hunts next year. have some friends in the Layton area but they don't hunt at all and can't help me. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

There are no OTC combo tags in Utah unless you are talking about small game. 99.99% of the deer tags go in the drawings and those that are left over are usually in units that are 99% private lands. Right now the only tags that are actually available are the spike elk tags which go on sale next month along with the any bull elk tags. The spike elk tags are good for the majority of the state and the any bull tags are restricted to a few units. There is also the anterless tags that the application process starts next month. These tags are unit specific so you would need to know where you planned to hunt before you put in for one of them. But even the cow elk tags are becoming a tag that you need a few points to draw.
