Just spent 13 days hunting elk with my brother on his AZ archery tag. Every day was up at 2:30 am and climbng some incredibly steep canyons up and down. We had a small 5 point at 27 yards on the second day of hunting but he elected to pass. Hd several other close encounters but no shooters. The giant bull was bugling from across the meadow but would not come in closer than 97 yards.
Unfortunately he did not fill his tag since he was holding out for a big one, he still has meat from last years bull.
The getting in shape routine I started way back in April really paid off, I could really tell the difference from previous years when I didn't have the time to work out for such an extended period. My legs felt strong for the entire 13 days and never felt sore and my back and shoulders while carrying a pack felt good too.
I guess you can never be in too good of shape for elk hunting.
