I was wondering how the deer herd looked like this year in the Gunnison area after the big winter. Are there any observations that people may be willing to share? Age class for bucks, does and fawn numbers?
Over all it is poor. Last winters big snows hammered the deer hard. Numbers are at least half of the year before and not seeing many fawns with does. As for bucks, yes still some around but not as many and have not seen many shooters.
I was out in 54 for 4th season. I saw more mule deer than in the last 5 years. Not many yearlings with the does though . But plenty of nice mature and young bucks. Most were seen from 9000 up to 11,500. Bucks were chasing does. Saw one group of 18 on friday, one nice buck and the rest were does and 3 or 4 yearlings. Did see about 6 skeleton remains near the creeks also. I believe the herd will come back just will take some time.
