Just wondering if there is anyone who could tell me when the snow starts piling up in the Gros Ventre wilderness area? We are headed up in a few weeks and hoping to find some cows moved down by then.

84-6 tag . I just got back from the Gillette area for an antelope and was surprised how warm it was also I was shocked the wind wasn't blowing .

The snow happens when it happens. I was on a guided hunt for the elk opener (Sept. 26th) in the Gros Ventre in 2013, and 2 feet of snow was dumped the night before we rode in. The cook tent was collapsed, and it was hard hunting as the elk near this high camp moved out. It hurt us, but helped at the lower camp that was over-run with elk. Much of the snow melted, and the elk didn't move to the feed ground until much later. My other elk in the Gros Ventre was in mid-October, and I shot a 6x6 that was in the snow above timberline. So, I guess I am saying that you can't plan on any specific date.

I hear ya there RicMic. I set our hunt dates months ago based on the historical weather I was able to dig up . Now it's time to cross our fingers and hope the weather works in our favor. The great thing about this place and a couple others on the web is that you can talk to people who are there or close by in real time.
