Mike Eastman's "Elk hunting the West" was and still is my "Bible" on Elk hunting. I recommend you buy it, and absorb it.

Backcountry Bowhunting by Cameron Hanes is also a good book, he covers elk hunting and much more.

71 and 711. I wish I'd drawn a 1st season tag but I can hunt the same area and continue to learn the country. One of the things you'll read in Elk Hunting the West is hunt the same country over and over so you know it like the back of your hand. You gonna backpack it or have a base camp?

Another one would be The Ultimate Guide to Elk Hunting by Bob Robb.

I hear ya. Hunting is like our version of the Olympics only better. We get to participate every year instead of every four. Target shooting hiking, testing new equipment and handloads, food plans, for me it's all part of the journey. The anticipation and getting ready for the hunt just adds to the experience.
