The poacher got off a lot lighter than he would have if I were Judge. He'd be waiting at least 10 years before applying for a license again. Fine should be a lot more too. What a shame...........

Very few judges will place heavy fines and penalties on poachers, even those who are convicted multiple times.

Until the state legislatures get off of their duffs and pass some laws that mandate stiffer penalties this will go on.

This judge probably looked at this case and figured that it was a first time offense and I am sure that the poacher pleaded his case starting with "I'll never do it again" and "it was done in the heat of the moment" type of BS.

I agree usually these thieves get off easy. But $28,000 for a deer is pretty steep. I still think he should serve some jail time and volunteer for G&F once released.

Pretty steep? How much would he have made off that head in endorsements or if he decided to sell it had he gotten away with it? Pretty light punishment IMO.

I get where you're coming from Brownelk. I would like to see these guys actually do some time. This amish guy had the family bail him out with tax free cash (I assume).
On another note: I know the amish are not vain or want dolls with faces, mirrors, etc. How amish is this guy that he wanted a mount made...? I'd throw him in the clink for a bit.

You guys can call me nuts, but between the auto insurance & ag lobbies in play in the midwest, I can kind of understand why the penalty was so low.

A whitetail, however pretty he is, in Ohio or Iowa; is different than moose in Alaska.

Personally, all that aside, I do agree that the penalty should have been much more severe.

The part that amazes me the most is that a Dutchie took it to a taxidermist in the first place.

They are the worst for poaching I have ever seen bar none.

I'll answer in a politcally sensitive way-I'm 1/2 Italian-1/2 Hispanic and not easily bothered by ethnic descriptive terms.

"Dutchie"-Amish, like calling an Italian like me "wop"-some folks do get offended by these terms-so be nice and use discretion.

I looked it up in urban dictionary.
(slang, smoking) A cannabis blunt rolled inside a Dutch Masters cigar.
(slang, smoking) A cannabis joint.
(Canada) A fast food pastry, being a square doughnut with raisins and glaze.

I used to have a lease pretty close to here. I gave it up because every gun season, the Amish would get together and deer drive half the county. No regard for property lines, laws, or animals. Pretty typical for Amish country in Ohio. They don't use ID's and just give them GW's fake names so there are rarely consequences. But by golly if someone kills a big buck...the ODNR suddenly figures out a way to enforce the law and get their restitution! Wish they'd crack down on the bearded mafia!
