Getting Started in WY

Hello,

I just moved to Wyoming (Rawlins area) last summer and am looking forward to Elk hunting this fall. I do not have much experience elk hunting but I am trying to learn. I will be using a General Tag and was looking for any help, tips, pointers, anything for some general units close to me. I have been reading all the books and internet articles I can find and have been doing some hiking in the Medicine Bow National Forest. Any help would be appreciated, not looking for honey holes, just looking for info to start with, like what to look for, how to get away from other hunters, how to find elk, etc.

Get out early and glass! I have a new area this year and thats what ive been doing... the more the better. are you rifle or archery hunting?

Welcome Jerm8352. There is a healthy population of elk down in the Sierra Madre range, and also the Snowy Range. My advice would be to do a lot of hiking and try to find some out of the way spots that hold elk. There are a ton of hunters that hunt the Snowy's and Sierra Madre's but a majority of them are close to the road hunters. I know a guy who hunts one of the wilderness areas the last week of October and always gets a decent bull. Send me a PM and I can give you some more pointers.

The elk will move ALOT by the time rifle comes around, depends on pressure and the first snow... I always like when its hot in october because the elk stay high and very few people like to work for an animal. if you get back a mile or two you will be past 95% of other hunters

I lived in Wyoming (Casper & Cheyenne) for a number of years and hunted mostly south of Rawlins in Units 15, 12, 13, 21, 110. Lots of elk but also lots of elk hunters. Mike Eastman has some excellent books and videos on elk hunting in Wyoming.

Thank you all so very much. My next concern is just finding an area that will give me the best shot at getting an elk. I don't care about size or sex, I just want to be successful.
