Getting Old

Hi my name is Robert and I've been on this site for at least three yeas but this is my first time posting on the CO forum. I was hoping I could get a little info from some of you CO deer hunters.

My dilemma is that I'm 64 yr old but still in very good shape but I only have 3 deer points. I want to burn them this year or next. I also have 3 points for WY deer but even with in the special draw, I may not be able to draw the area I want. I'm not afraid to backpack in 5-8 miles and I have a friend in UT that will come with me but not hunt.
I've been looking at the CO fish and game site but its a bit intimidating and bewildering to me at this point. With three different hunt times my head is still spinning on all the choices out there.
I'm looking for an area where I can kill a 140 in plus 4x4 and would not be opposed to a land owner voucher if the price was reasonable. Any info your willing to pass on would be appreciated and I''ll do more home work on it. I know I don't have a lot of time to pull this together but I'd like to hunt deer in CO or WY this year.
I've made 10 antelope hunts in WY and can give you info on the places I've hunted and maybe some deer info also.

Thank you.

Fish, I will give you some suggestions tonight. A 140 inch buck is possible anywhere on the western slope. Check your PMs tonight

I would pick the season first. Just remember that during all 3 seasons (4th also in certain units), you will be hunting with elk hunters too as the dates are for the most part exactly the same. 1st season for elk is draw only, usually fewer elk hunters. 2nd & 3rd are over the counter, so there will be lots of elk hunters.

Weather could be a consideration for you too. The later seasons have more of a chance for some snow. I particularly like to hunt right after a snow storm. Game easier to see and every track you see will be fresh. I would pick a couple of units and then go to the website and check on the statistics to see how many elk & deer tags were issued for each season. This will give you an idea of how many hunters were in the field. Once you have a couple of units in mind, PM me and we can discuss it further.

Fish; I'm 62 and did a solo backpack mule deer hunt in a wilderness area in CO last fall. I think you can draw a number of muzzle-loader tags with your points. I will have 9 points this year and have applied for the early rifle tags the last couple years and was shut out. I did find a landowner tag that allowed me to hunt the whole unit. I don't know what they ask for early on, but I found this one a week before the season began, and paid $400 for it. You then get a voucher that allows you to go to a vendor and buy the tag. We don't have the time to wait it out, so I suggest that you try the app route, and then go for a landowners tag if you don't draw. I got a 142" buck...not a monster, but beats tag soup. PM me if you want some specific info.

Fish, there are many places in Wyoming that I believe with 3 points can get you a 140" buck. They just take patience and effort to hunt. I know of a couple places that are general for Residents that usually get over hunted, mostly by weekenders or road hunters. With patience and thinking outside the box, you can find a decent mature buck. I have been focusing on archery elk the last couple of years and have not spent much time looking for deer. My daughter turns 12 this year and it will be her first year hunting. We are going to spend time scouting one of these areas if we do not draw LE. I will keep a journal and let you know my findings. I know it won't help this year, but maybe give you some options in the future.

SS,

We talked before about region D near your home. I shot my best buck there but I haven't hunted it since they made some of it LE. That really shrunk the size of region D. You had said D was on the rebound and the biologist for that area said the same. He told me it may be hard to kill a 160 plus buck there. That was a few years ago and things may have changed. Probably don't need 3 points to darw it.
I may just put in for G and pony up the extra bucks for the special draw, but even with that, I may not draw G. I really don't want to draw CO and WY in the same year,so I'll have to make a decision soon. Thank god the WY app time is not until the end of May.

I was thinking of somewhere else than D. I'll pm you with where my plans are if I don't draw LE.
