Hey guys, need some general advice here. My brother is looking to rifle hunt mule deer in Utah. He is new to hunting but not to the out doors. What would be some good units to put in for with a decent change of getting into deer? He doesn't care about size but just a chance at filling the freezer. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I'd say pic any general unit in Utah that has good draw odds. I am currently hunting a unit that has hundreds of hunters each year during the rifle season. Was the hunting pressure shitty, yea. But there was a lot of deer and many were meat bucks. Steep nasty country though.

Id agree with b&c.. Th other thought is what kind of terrain he likes. Utah has lots of variety. Most units have plenty little deer..... I would shy away from the Wasatch front because of hunter accessibility but there are plenty bucks on the peaks in Wasatch front.

Were you planning on trying to hunt this year which could be quite hard since the application period is finished and if it is like last year there will be very few left over archery tags. In Utah now days you need at least one or two preference points to even think of drawing a general season tag except for archery but even the better general units require a point for archery.

For a area I would pick the Manti in central Utah. I don't have the units right now but it is a huge one with lots of deer and lots of access. Not to mention lots of hunters.

You could put in for anterless tags or buy general bulls or spike(low odds in success, but great for learning)? Or tag along with another hunter? Then you could hold off for buck deer until next year.

Just be prepared for processing a large animal and having the gear for it and the hunt. That is the hardest part once you have an elk down 2 to 3 miles from the nearest roadway and you need to get it out.

Plenty of opportunities for the non-trophy hunters in Utah every year. I will hunt general bull, pine valley buck, Fish lake Cow, and maybe an doe antelope (debating if I will put in, I have 4 or 5 points). Any hunting is good hunting!
