Alright guys application season is around the corner and i have just 1 point. I keep going back and forth on my strategy. I was thinking about burning the 1 point on g38 and getting a D7 or d8 tag. Another part of me wonders if it's worth hunting g38 when I feel I could have similar success in d8 or D7. I plan to bow and rifle hunt so hopefully find some high county velvet bucks for some early season archery and then have a chance at them during general season. I hunted d8 last year saw a couple deer, but feel I need to give it another chance. G38 is intriguing but most of they county seems thick and tough to glass.

I keep thinking that with all the rain we've had, this is the perfect year to spend whatever points you have. But that being said the D-zones should see really good antler growth too so idk.

I'm in the same boat too. I keep changing my mind on what I am gonna do haha. They severely cut tags in X12, and X9 so who knows if that will hurt the odds in other zones as people look to apply elsewhere.

Fins, I am new to CA and also will be trying my luck in D8. Am I correct that I can buy an AO tag and then still apply for a D8 rifle tag?

I've hunted D7 for 60 years and the deer will be as high as they can get as most of the snow will be gone. I've hunted several times after massive winter snows and the deer were at 10,000' just like always. Just depend on the summer, how hot it is, how the bugs are and where the food is.

Thanks CC, I always take your advice to heart. I am actually planning a early season archery hunt in the area you used to hunt in D7. Only 4 more months, I can't wait.

Well I'm gonna apply for g38 as my first choice so let's see what happens. If I don't get it I'm totally fine with that as I'll take the point as I plan to spend most of my time in the D zone anyway.
