Foot protection and warmth

Curious about what guys have used to help protect your dogs feet for waterfowling. I'm pretty skeptical of the hunting booties on the market. Seems like they're designed mostly for smaller, upland dogs... I've got an 83lb lab, and I just imagine them coming off in the first hour or so... Has anyone ever used a foot wax or even Vaseline with any luck? My dogs not a tender foot by any means but he does get splinters and cuts from ice occasionally. He's got a small absess right now on his paw which has us sidelined for about a week.

Also, any tricks to help keep him warmer in the blind? I use a nice thick neoprene vest, but he still shivers a little once he's wet and we're waiting a while between shots. Thanx gang.

Some guys use pads for their "spot", same concept as a thermarest.

Nobodys used any dog boots or foot wax?
We used mushers wax last winter. Ours is Not really a bird dog but we have to run the crazy thing or we can?t stand to be around her. I mean like 30 mph plus is her preference. Not sure of the exact speed but four wheeler is in fifth and she is looking back wondering why we are so slow. The snow was hard on her feet and the wax did help quite a bit. She didn?t like it at first but got used to it when her feet didn?t hurt. Probably have to this winter too. It seemed like last winter she just had to build up different calluses so we didn?t use it the whole winter. Mushers secret is the name of the wax and I think it’s tenactin spray to use on the cuts for antibacterial seems to work pretty good. Boots lasted all of thirty secrets haven’t figured that one out.

I will get Todd to chime in on this. For the most part he avoids the really cold stuff with his dog.
