Alaska has always interested me and so have moose. I have twin nine year old sons and would like to plan a moose hunt possibly a river float style hunt for when they graduate high school. I know this is planning a little in advance but I figure better to soon than not soon enough. My question is, does this sound doable, preferably unguided? I guess I was thinking I could rent rafts and have someone drop us up river from our vehicle. would bow hunting or rifle be better, and why? I would prefer bow. I am open to any other suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Completely doable.
Rifle or bow... Definitely have a rifle with you if you are bow hunting in case of bears.
A rifle is good if you have failed with bow and you really want the one that is 3or4 hundred yards out there in the last day or two.

Do you have relatives up there to go with? I think as a nonresident, you either need a guide or else have to go with an Alaska resident. Double check that though, I'm not 100% sure.

Completely doable. I would recomend buying the book Float hunting Alaska's wild rivers by Michael Strahan and the complete guide to float hunting by Larry Bartlett. Both books will give you most of the information you seek. Also a website owned by Mr. Strahan called Outdoorsdirectory.com has a forum that can be helpful but it would be quicker and less frustrating to just buy the books. I suggest you use the search feature on there before asking questions.

I've been planning a DIY Moose hunt in Alaska last couple years, and also purchased the books and videos you guys spoke about. They have lots of good info. I can't decide if I want to float down a river for a few weeks or land on a lake and hunt the surrounding areas. My buddy has done the latter and has two fine bulls to show for it.
