Looks like a lot of fun to see the variety, we are over run with mallards and that is just about it here.
The only mallards we get are golf course birds. Dad got a drake about 8-10 yrs ago, only one we’ve taken. Some guys used to hunt a park in the city and get mallards, while irritating the locals. Police are usually called on hunt days.

The state of FL started spraying off hydrilla, and the duck numbers have plummetted. Whole hunting lakes went fromhaving emergent vegetation and cattail /reed islands to flat open, void of ducks. We used to be in the top 10 for bird numbers and variety. Sure doesnt feel that way now.

my group hunts a wildlufe refuge and a quota draw system. They fo a draw and then have a free for all for leftover tags. Can usually get 1 or 2 weekend permits. This year the free for all was during hurricane Ian. We got 5 permits due to computer glitches and low numbers of folks applying.

The species
so far this season:
Bw teal
Gw teal
Shoveler
Gadwall
Widgeon
Ringneck
Bluebill/scaup
Redhead
Canvasback
Ruddy

we dont typically see many cans or redheads so that’s a big treat. Mostly get teal and some various puddlers.

have seen while hunting but not shot
Mottled
Pintail
Blackbelly tree duck

we dont get any numbers of geese.

nursing some gout today. The 2 80 yo old men are done hunting, hopefully they go tomorrow. Im the mud motor for a lot of the boat dragging, think thats what triggered the gout attack - 1/2 mile in ankle to knee deep mud both days last weekend. Refuge doesnt let us run motors in the marsh interior.
